Confused about what SEO, CTA, ROI, SMM, CPA jargon mean? Here are the basic terms you should know.
You see them and hear them all the time, but admit it, you have no clue what they mean, don't worry, we've all been there. All these acronyms and fancy words get thrown out there by the experts like you're supposed to know them, so to catch you up here are the most commonly used words and definitions in digital marketing. Now you'll be able to talk marketing lingo like you got it going on.
1- SEO Search Engine Optimization
SEO is a way a company optimizes its webpage allowing the website to rank higher on a search engine’s results like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. The higher the ranking, the more traffic is generated to the site.
2- CTA Call To Action
CTA is an image or line of text that prompts visitors, leads, and customers to take action. It is, quite literally, a "call" to take an "action." For example: VISIT OUR AFFILIATES PAGE
3- CTR Click Through Rate
Click-through Rate identifies the percentage of people who click on a link. Usually placed in an email, an ad, website page… etc. The higher the CTR percentage, the more people went through.
Conversion is when a visitor takes the desired action while visiting your site. This can be a purchase, membership signup, download or registration for newsletter.
5- SERP (WTF right?)
Search Engine Results Page are the results provided by a search engine after a search query is made. Basically, if you are looking for where your website ranks for “Best Construction Rental Equipment” a SERP report will let you know that your website is ranked #4. Meaning that your website is in the Fourth position of the first page.
6- RSS (No, is not the Titanic)
Really Simple Syndication is a technology that allows users to become subscribers of content and ultimately get automatic alerts if updates are made. They would need an RSS Reader which is where they receive all the updates. Below are a few popular RSS Readers:
7- Social Networking (Come on, you know this!)
Social networking is the practice of using social media platforms to build online communities where people share more than what they should, common interests or annoying activities (ha!). The most common social networks are: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest… you get the idea.
8- Organic Traffic
This is traffic that is generated to your website which is generated by a Search Engine. This could be traffic from Google, Yahoo or Bing. Organic traffic is what you want and it's FREE (free is always good, never turn down a free drink!).
A keyword is word or phrase that your audience uses to search for relevant topics or items on search engines. If you are a book store, a relevant keyword could be “Buy Marketing Book” [short keyword] or “Looking to purchase the latest marketing book” [long tail keyword].
10- CPC Cost Per Click
Cost per Click is a pricing model where businesses are charged by publishers for every click people make on an ad which leads people to your company’s website (hopefully to a landing page where they can purchase your products!).
11- Landing Page
A page on a company’s website that is meant to act as the entry page to a site asking to sign up to their newsletter or buy a specific product.
12- Digital Marketing
Digital marketing is a term for all of your online marketing efforts. Businesses leverage digital channels such as Google search, social media
networks, email, and their websites to connect with their current and prospective customers. Unlike old school or traditional marketing: TV ads, Newspaper, Magazines.
13- ROI Return On Investment
Expressed usually as a percentage, return on investment is a measure of profitability that indicates whether or not a company is using its resources in an efficient manner.
